It was quantum science day at Hewlett-Packard's laboratories one Friday late last month, and the wastebaskets were overflowing. Sixty-five of the world's leading researchers in the emerging field of molecular electronics had come to Palo Alto, Calif., for a symposium with about 20 of HP's research staff. Between talks, Stan Williams, director of quantum science research, a senior fellow at HP, and host of the day's events, shuttled in and out of the meeting room, carrying out trash cans filled with scientists' scratch paper and cycling in fresh ones.
