Tomorrow's CIO: Lateral Moves

It's tough to break into tech. At the executive level, this seems to be the case most often. CIOs are increasingly getting line-of-business roles, or roles that combine IT and operations. But the reverse is still very unusual: Most companies hire CIOs and VPs of IT who have a background primarily in IT. A full 26% of CIOs who were hired from other companies held that same title at their previous employer. And 22% moved from a role of directors of IT. Fifteen percent came to the leadership ranks from VP of IT and another 13% from other IT management titles. Only 9% moved from executive corporate managers and line-of-business managers to become IT leaders.
