The long-sought memristor-until now a missing link in electronic circuit theory-has been invented by Hewlett-Packard senior fellow R. Stanley Williams. HP says it created a thin film that changes resistance when current passes through it; this could someday lead to a nanoscale alternative to flash memory or solutions to the problem of ever-smaller circuits generating too much power and heat. Memristors-the fourth passive component type besides resistors, capacitors, and inductors-were postulated in 1971 by University of California, Berkeley, professor Leon Chua. "The era of nanoscale electronics will be enabled by the memristor," Chua says. "This is not just an invention, it is a basic sci- entific discovery."
