Citrix systems plans to launch a desktop virtualization server that can be used to provision hundreds or thousands of users. Each time a user logs on using XenDesktop, a personal desktop will be built from a set of tested components, per the user's personal settings. The approach lets IT maintain one desktop image on a data center server as opposed to thousands of virtualized desktops or thousands of physical PCs, says Sumit Dhawan, senior manager of Citrix product management. Operating system changes and updates to applications are done once in the data center, and then those parts get assembled into a desktop the next time the user logs on.
