With Nortel muddling through bankruptcy proceedings and Cisco jumping into new markets, Avaya thinks it can grow by sharpening its focus on voice over IP. Avaya's new VoIP platform, Aura, employs SIP standards and includes new management software to simplify deployments. Many companies have patched to- gether legacy IP phone systems that they manage separately, says Gartner analyst Jay Lassman. Some plans to consolidate those systems got scuttled in the recession. Aura's SIP-based server, Session Manager, combined with administrative software, System Manager, works as the central point for multiple contact centers, PBX systems, video and collabora- tion apps, and other communications infrastructure.
