Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard plan to release the HP Enterprise Database Consolidation Appliance for SQL Server next month. The hardware-software package is aimed at speeding deployment and simplifying management of hundreds, if not thousands, of database instances in private clouds. Customers will be able to deploy new database instances in minutes with the appliance, Microsoft says, while cutting operations costs by as much as 75% compared with conventional database deployments—by reducing floor space, energy usage, and infrastructure costs. The device consolidates a database with no application or database changes, using built-in tools for database migration and management, Microsoft says. The appliance is clearly Microsoft and HP's answer to Oracle's Exadata, the database machine Oracle says has more than 1,000 deployments.
