摘要

This is the fourth edition of a widely used text in the field of knowledge organization, first published in 1987. A number of other reviews have already been written of this work, ranging from strong endorsements (Tran, 2008) to criticisms of the foundations underlying some of the traditional approaches to knowledge organization (particularly in subject access) (Hjorland, 2009) or the coverage of specific areas of growing importance (such as non-text content) (Terris, 2008). This range of opinions points out that we are still waiting for the perfect textbook in the area of knowledge organization, and highlights some of the difficulties inherent in writing a textbook in a rapidly changing field with an ever-growing audience that does not intend to make their home in the traditional library.
