Will Traditional LCDs Be the Dominant 'Electronic Paper'?

Passive film-compensated supertwisted-nematic (FSTN) displays and active-matrix twisted-nematic (AMTN) displays have driven the success and enormous growth of the liquid-crystal-display (LCD) market. Initially, the FSTN display sparked the growth of the portable-PC market; more recently, it has benefited from the rapid growth of the cellular-phone market. The AMTN display has now replaced the passive FSTN in laptop PCs and, by virtue of its continually improving performance, has driven the explosive growth of this product. The AMTN is also rapidly replacing cathode-ray tubes (CRTs) in camcorders.
