Amilestone in the commercialization of light-emitting-polymer (LEP) organic light-emitting-diode (OLED) technology was reached in June 2002 when a Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) licensee started production of LEP displays for commercial products. The first commercial product using these materials is an LEP display for the Norelco Spectra~(TM) electric shaver - the one that James Bond uses - which was shown at SID 2002 in Boston. The display provides charge time and maintenance information for the shaver, and even has its own display "demo mode." In addition, Delta Optoelectronics is sampling displays for a GoDot MP3 player in Taiwan, and in December 2002, DuPont Displays announced the release of an OEM evaluation kit with a monochrome LEP display. Because CDT holds the fundamental patent for conjugated polymer light emission and controls a large patent portfolio related to LEPs, and since the authors work for CDT, we will focus on developments at CDT and its licensees, but progress at other LEP-development companies is also rapid.
