摘要

You might say that going blind is one of the worst imaginable nightmares, but going deaf is also a horrible prospect. We get most of our immediate orientation through sight, as well as aesthetic satisfaction, and a great deal of information in the form of text that we read with our eyes. But losing hearing isolates people terribly and also attracts impatience from others rather than the sympathy that blindness receives. If we are comparing the two forms of loss we also shouldn't forget that much more of our information comes through what we hear, specifically in the form of voice communication, than maybe we realize. Certainly in parts of the world where text, whether in print or accessed electronically, is scarce, voice is dominant. It isn't therefore only a question of economics or infrastructure that is behind the triumph of a voice-based communication technology - the cellphone - in the developing world.
