Stray Thoughts: Money (That's What I Want)

The song from which the title comes admits that 'Money don't mean everything, that's true' before stressing that nevertheless it means almost everything in almost every circumstance. The message of the song was placed in a rather absurd focus at a recent conference on Human Resources in the Information Professions held at the Center for Documentation and Research in Abu Dhabi. A recent former president of the American Library Association, Maurice Freedman, stood up before a large audience from the Gulf States and a number of other countries in the region to deliver a presentation. In fact his allotted 20 minutes was more or less completely taken up with the loading and showing of a DVD. In this a number of American librarians from different types of institutions stressed the significance of their work and bemoaned the inadequate salaries paid to themselves and their colleagues.
