Education for Librarianship and Information Studies: fit for purpose?

Hosting or initiating a conference can be seen as a sign of the growing maturity of a School of Librarianship and Information Studies, usually reflecting some regular engagement in research in the topic that the conference addresses. Few regular conferences select their venues on the basis of a competitive bidding process. If they did, one wonders how many offers they would receive. The work involved, even for a relatively small conference (say fewer than 100-200 participants) inevitably puts some pressure on their colleagues, both academic and administrative, although using Microsoft's Conference Management Toolkit can make the organizational work run a little smoother and easier.
