This white paper is based on a conversation with Apala Lahiri Chavan, the Chief Oracle and Innovator at Human Factors International, who discusses the impact of the futurist perspective on user experience design. Apala argues that, in order to make informed decisions, we need to be able to spot trends that are currently happening in the world around us, make sense of those trends and combine them with our toolbox of methods and techniques. The core of the discussion is based on the need for futuristic scalability. This is a different kind of scalability than what we are used to, since it includes methods like environmental scanning for ecosystem patterns and behavior, in all its complexities, and the need to determine if these are recurring themes. According to Apala, by adding insight into these factors, designers are helping create the markets of tomorrow.
