In conclusion there are limitations to the ability of AFEF to film form on certain fuels with low surface tensions and this is determined by the physical chemistry underpinning the concept of the spreading coefficient. Coming back to comment of Williams et al. made at the Orlando meeting in March 2011 referring to the results on iso-octane that"... extinguishment performance in the absence of film formation can be improved by optimization of other properties of foam...". the intriguing possibility exists that with advances m foam technology correctly formulated fluorine-free foams may actually be in a position to outperform traditional AFFFs under certain circumstances where the AFFFs are unable to film form, such as with shorter chain and branched-chain hydrocarbons or fuel blends containing these hydrocarbons.
