Small carriers delay logging device switchover

Small freight carriers are taking their time with the U.S. government-mandated switchfrom automatic onboard recording devices (AOBRDs) to electronic logging devices(ELDs). A survey by FreightWaves and EROAD in July showed more than 90% ofsmall carriers have not made the switch and didn't plan to until the final quarter of2019 prior to the Dec. 16 deadline. The survey, which was conducted by CarrierLists,garnered responses from 162 carriers with between five and 250 trucks. It showed 83% of carriers indicated they areELD-ready while 17% are still using AOBRDs. The survey showed that 41% of carriers plan to make the switch inNovember, 23% in October and 27% planning to wait until December. Carriers that run nationwide lanes are morelikely to already be ELD-compliant (86%) than regional and super-regional carriers (78%).
