We have all seen TV shows or movies in which a witness is testifying in a court of law. The first step of a sworn testimony is a commitment to be truthful. The oath or affirmation will vary slightly from country to country, but the goal remains the same: You must tell the truth. In the United States, the witness will be asked "Do you solemnly swear that you will tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?".
