Raw Materials for the Italian Stoneware Tile Industry

The history of the Italian ceramic tile industry, in the last decades, is briefly recalled. The distinction between the commercial types of tiles, of the current production, is made on the basis of practical and technical characteristics. Also the raw materials used in the various processes of the Italian tile industry are reviewed. Ternary diagrams, based on chemical and mineralogical data, are utilized to distinguish compositional fields of raw materials and products. Then, the clays and complementary raw materials and the bodies for stoneware tile productions are described in detail. Finally, a statistical study of the composition of the red clays of the Northern Apennines is presented.
