As natural disasters disrupt supply chains, they influence demand for transportation-sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Rail transportation in Mexico is no exception. A failed corn crop had big repercussions for one Mexican railroad and its U.S. partner in 2011. "One of our most important commodities is corn from the state of Sinaloa in northwestern Mexico," says Rogelio Velez, chief executive officer of Mexican railroad Ferromex. That region harvests five billion tons of corn in a typical year.
