We drive, bike and walk through them everyday with a quick glance and hardly a thought. Yet intersections are considered a national public safety problem and one of the top priorities of the Federal Highway Administration Office of Safety (FHWA). There are more than 300 thousand signalized traffic signals in the US. According to the FHWA, on average, every hour in the US, one person dies in an intersection-related vehicle crash. In addition roughly 25 percent of the vehicle related fatalities and 50 percent of the injuries, occur at intersections. We depend on traffic lights to keep us safe in those danger zones, but storms or power failures strike and intersections can go dark, crippling mobility and safety of the public. In addition, vehicles often hit the traffic cabinets, creating a risk for injury, electrical shock and hazardous material spills.
