Recently, I had the pleasure of presenting to our locaL DOT on the "State of the Practise/State of the Art in Traffic Signal. Control." The presentation looked at the evolution of traffic signals over the past century; the impact of society needs; the effect of technological changes; and introduction of standards development on the industry as it grew and matured. In preparing the presentation, I realized that roughly every thirty (30) years, the industry experienced a "game-changer." Witness the inventions as a product of WWII; the development of the microprocessor; and recently the Connected Vehicle (CV) program. History confirms the traffic industry is an early adopter of technology. Everything from WWII radar to microprocessors has quickly made its way into traffic control products -reducing costs while improving functionality.
