Top 25 2005 NEC Changes Traffic Signal and Roadway Lighting Related

The publication of the 2005 NEC marked its 50th anniversary edition. There were 3,577 proposals for changes to the 2002 NEC and 4,031 comments on those proposals. The 2005 NEC has numerous changes that will directly impact traffic signal and roadway lighting, including: 1. Definition and rules for open bottom handhole enclosures. 2. Rules for identification of branch circuits. 3. Use of reinforcing steel in concrete footings as part of grounding electrode system (Ufer ground) is now required. 4. Use of the color green for anything other than an equipment grounding conductor now prohibited (I.E. green wire for green display). 5. GFCI's are now required for outdoor public spaces. 6. HID luminaires require "Type O" lamps or a method to contain a broken lamp. This article reviews only a few of the changes that affect traffic signal and roadway lighting. Many states require an 8 or 16 hour class on the latest changes in the NEC for electricians to renew their electrical license. These classes are available on-line or locally and would be the best source for understanding the changes.
