Cell Phone Signals Help to Manage Traffic

In a pilot project in Texas, Siemens is developing intelligent transportation technology for the fast and orderly evacuation of citizens. In this project, traffic light timing systems register traffic flow and adjust the phases of red and green light accordingly. The traffic density data collected by the systems are also incorporated into digital road maps, which drivers can download onto their smartphones or navigation systems in order to find the fastest routes out of town. In an emergency, the system can control all traffic lights from a central location. The U.S. Department of Transportation supports the project in its "Connected Vehicle" program, a research initiative focused on networking vehicles and infrastructure.
