Dr Geoffrey Carlton Farnell (1925-2009)

Geoff Farnell joined the Harrow Research Laboratories of Kodak Limited in 1948 as a physics graduate of Leeds University. During his 34 years with the Company, Geoff led teams of research workers on a variety of topics in photographic science. Much of this research was directed towards gaining an understanding of the relation between the physical properties of emulsion layers and their photographic response. He was a pioneer in the use of electron microscopy in the scientific study of photographic materials, and thereby developed a technique which led to the first determination of the quantum sensitivities of silver-halide emulsion grains.
