When Aardman Animations got into their stride film festival juries and alert television executives were quick to give recognition to their films. The studio first achieved real fame with Creature Comforts (first shown on Channel 4 in 1989, and a mere five minutes long) and their long metrage, The Wrong Trousers (29 minutes), commissioned by the BBC as Christmas programme for 1993, both won Oscars for Best Short Animated Film for their Director/Animator, Nick Park, as well as many other awards. The Wrong Trousers made stars of the two main characters, Wallace the eccentric inventor, and Gromit the dog, his highly intelligent but silent assistant. The BBC again backed their latest adventures in Close Shave, shown in December 1995, in which the intrepid pair run a window cleaning business and have a series of adventures with a robotic sheep rustler. And Wallace falls for the owner of a wool shop. It has intriguing allusions to other films, special effects, and deliberately dreadful puns, yet the characters have lost none of their fey charm.
