If we imagine ourselves in the same scenario as primitive man, it is easy to guess just how important the sense of hearing was, maybe even more important than sight. Yet, when looking to the multi-media future, why is so little attention given to the sound? This paper makes a plea for equality. We can only employ two of our five senses in order to communicate ideas and emotions to our audiences. The powerful effect of vision has been explored by artists since prehistoric times, yet since their work survives to this day, a sense of continuity can be maintained as modern vision technology offers us ever more powerful tools.
