From the first days of moving pictures, the pioneers understood that future developments would give us a two-eyed (stereoscopic) process that simulated the depth perception we see in everyday vision. The Lumiere brothers Louis and Auguste were enthusiasts for stereoscopy, and made repeated efforts to achieve a commercially-successful process. In the 1930s, using a special camera built for them by Andre Debrie, they produced stereoscopic short films which were shown with the familiar anaglyph (two-colour) spectacles. The twin images were toned in complementary colours and printed on opposite surfaces of double-coated film.
