Exposure Levels and the perception of Grain

In previous Training Topics articles repeated mention was made of the modern very fine grain in motion picture film stocks. This was particularly highlighted in November of last year when describing Kodak's T-Grain structure in colour negative film stocks. Modern emulsion manufacture is so tightly controlled that there is little variation in the actual size of the grains. Therefore to coverthe range required by the cinematogra-pher, as mentioned in the September issue, each colour, that is red, green and blue, is captured by three layers per colour not just one. In fact it gives the emulsion designer the opportunity to extend the range of the negative film stocks beyond that which was possible using the old conventional grain.
