Animal Farm" was released in 1955, well before computers came to play a part in animation. But in many ways, much seems the same. John Halas, in April 1954, told the Society that while more than 1000 feature films were made every year, these had never included more than one animated feature (Unexpectedly, he called them "cartoons"). Since films began, there had been only 25 animated features, and 31 productions had been abandoned - probably reflecting the sheer physical effort involved, quite apart from the skill, experience and creative ability needed. Inevitably, America led with 15 projects, and Animal Farm had just become the first long animation ever to be finished in Britain.
