The fantastic array of images you see are technically nothing more than electronic signals, properly amplified and synchronized. The glamour of Oscar night, the grittiness of a true crime story - both exist as images only at the extreme ends of the transmission/reception chain. Between these two end points, the images are electronic impulses undistinguishable from all the other electrons flowing in circuits everywhere. It is the ability to observe and differentiate these signals that lets us control them, and broadcast pictures and sound instead of electronic noise. Observing and measuring TV signals is the province of a specialized class of test instrumentation that has evolved concurrently with the growth of television technology.
