Focus on Oswald Morris

Recently I had the great pleasure of interviewing the legendary cinematographer Oswald Morris OBE, BSC. Ossie, as he prefers to be called, was born in Hillingdon, Middlesex in 1915. He started in the film business aged 16 after writing to a number of studios. He first wrote to the major studios, receiving the usual 'we will keep you on file' letter. His father suggested that he write to the smaller studios and he eventually got a reply from the chief engineer at Wembley studios. Ossie was offered an apprenticeship that didn't pay but was told he would get one and threepence (around 6p) supper money. Ossie became a clapper boy and tea and coffee fetcher. Wembley studios turned out the 'quota quickies', which only took two weeks to make.
