The Development of the Movietone Sound on Film System

There are many personal claims to be the original inventors of motion picture sound on film recording. Probably the best-known claimants are the Americans Lee de Forest and Theodore Case. There were over twenty-six patents for sound on film systems filed in various parts of the world before de Forest and Case started their work in the 1920s. However, it is due to their efforts, especially those of Case and his colleague Earl Sponable that recording sound on film became a practical and commercial reality.
