Freddie studied Engineering at North Western Polytechnic, but soon found his way into photography, initially as a Stills Trainee, before getting employment at British International Pictures in Elstree, as a Clapper-Loader. He had told us that the filmmaking standard was not very high there - with the notable exception of the great Freddie Young. He was therefore able to learn by other people's mistakes, which, he said, gave him the opportunity to learn quite fast.
