摘要

Slaughterhouse, my company instructor and freight dog men-tor, cured me of making kamikaze dives for the threshold lights out of an approach. (See IFR, November Issue, "Broke Out, Now What?") The following paragraphs expand on his thoughts about approach visibility and the important role approach lighting plays in establishing approach minimums. IFR flight planning decisions depend on weather as well as other important flight environment issues however, a safe approach and landing requires adequate visibility at the destination. FAR Part 91.175 (c) and (d) spell out the requirements for descending below MDA and DA and then landing out of the approach. According to subparagraph (c) you must have at least one of 10 listed items in sight in order to continue below the MDA/DA. Only one item, the approach light configuration, is on the approach side, the rest of the items are all on the runway or airport side. Both subparagraphs require the minimum flight visibility associated with the approach being used. Lighting systems make the runway environment more recognizable. Because of the lighting system's ability to slice through the clag and reach out to you, visibility minimums may be reduced.
