Performance Improvement Based on Link Quality Assessment in OLSR Protocol

Ad hoc wireless networks have characteristics such as limited resources (especially power) and changes in topology. It causes many links between nodes unstable and the route error prone. Therefore, in order to reduce packet loss in the routing process, it is important to select a stable link and a high-quality communication route. In the present paper, we propose a cross-layer approach in ad-hoc network routing based on physical layer information assessment. Bit error rate (BER) information from the physical layer will be used as a metric to define the weight of the stability of links. Based on the link stability information, we propose a novel algorithm that selects a multipoint relay (MPR) and a re-routing procedure to improve the performance of the optimized link state routing (OLSR) protocol. Simulation results reveal that the proposed BER-based OLSR achieves an improvement of more than 10% compared with the original OLSR in terms of throughput and end-to-end delay.
