The concept of fairing applied to triangular meshes with irregularnconnectivity has become more and more important. Previous contributionsnproposed a variety of fairing operators for manifolds and applied themnto the design of multi-resolution representations and editing tools fornmeshes. In this paper, we generalize these powerful techniques to handlennon-manifold models. We propose a method to construct fairing operatorsnfor non-manifolds which is based on standard operators for the manifoldnsetting. Furthermore, we describe novel approaches to guarantee volumenpreservation. We introduce various multi-resolution techniques thatnallow us to represent, smooth and edit non-manifold models efficiently.nFinally, we discuss a semi-automatic feature preservation strategy tonretain important model information during the fairing process
