Voice over IP (VoIP) is a key enabling technology for the migration of the circuit-switched public switched telephone network (PSTN) to packet-based networks. Long distance carriers are transporting voice traffic using this technology. Businesses and enterprises of all shapes and sizes are deploying VoIP in their networks; it is estimated that in few years, IP-based private branch exchange (IP-PBX) deployments will outnumber traditional PBX deployments. VoIP services are also being offered to residential customers.
