Wireless communications in the automated factory environment

The networking issues involved in the use of infrared communications in a factory environment are described. A brief history of the use of infrared and radio for indoor (factory environment) communications is given, and the physical infrared environment is reviewed. Topology and protocol alternatives are compared.
