A stack of multiple mirrors may be used to change one short pulse into a carefully crafted burst with a designed envelope. For example, 800-GHz bursts, digital pulse codes, and other discrete time signals are reported here. The direct design of these structures is problematic. Though linear and causal, their impulse response is nonlinear with respect to the reflection coefficients of the mirrors. However, if we represent the structure's energy transfer laws as a product of 2/spl times/2 scattering matrices then we can determine the reflection coefficients needed to produce a desired response using a recursive layer-peeling procedure that bypasses some tedious mathematics.
