We analyze the wavelength-converting operation of directionallyncoupled semiconductor optical amplifiers (DCSOA's) with respect to theirnstatic and dynamic characteristics. A complete dynamic DCSOA model basednon the modified time-dependent transfer-matrix method is developed. Thisnmodel accurately considers longitudinal variations of carrier and photonndensities, gain, refractive index, coupling coefficients, and lateralnoptical fields. The extinction ratio, modulation bandwidth, andnfrequency chirping of DCSOA-based wavelength converters areninvestigated. For most characteristics, the DCSOA scheme has advantagesnover cross-gain modulation. Furthermore, by optimizing the injectionncurrent into the DCSOA, even better performance can be attained
