ROYAL NAVY'S HEAD OF SURVEY SHIPS RETIRES AFTER SURVEYING WORLDWIDE

Captain David Lye, the head of [UK] Royal Naval survey ships in Devonport, has been round the world surveying the oceans and coastlines with the Royal Navy and now he retires, leaving the survey branch in its strongest and most advanced state ever. Previous holders of his post as Hydrographer of the Navy (the oldest titled job), such as Shackleton and Cooke, would not recognise the branch, revised and now to be bequeathed by Captain Lye, (also titled Captain Hydrography and Meteorology). He has sailed the survey branch into the forefront of modern underwater data-gathering with unprecedented digital processes on the newest ship. Surveying has now become a core function of modern warfare. This is especially significant in Devonport where the amphibious task group is based and whose role requires a clear picture of the coastal environment.
