The international dimension of HRD research, scholarship, and practice is the distinguishing feature of Human Resource Development International. Yet the extent to which the international community of HRD scholars share common assumptions about the field of inquiry, and what this means for practice is something that commands ever more frequent consideration. In this issue of Human Resource Development International there are a number of papers that question the assumptions that all too often are made about the universality of HRD practices, and key concepts associated with HRD such as performance, motivation, knowledge management and social capital.
