I am writing this editorial in the beautiful city of Kuala Lumpur, where I have just had the honour of presenting a keynote address to the 10th International Conference of the Academy of Human Resource Development (Asian Chapter). The theme of this jubilee conference was 'Capitalizing Human Expertise for Greater Innovation and Creativity' and this got me thinking about two issues: (1) how human expertise will have to be developed first, before it can be capitalized and (2) who is doing the capitalizing: the management of the organization or its employees (as well)? In this editorial I would like to share some of my thoughts on these two issues, from the perspective of future challenges for the field of HRD.
