Children in kindergarten today spend far more time being instructed and tested in literacy and math than they do learning through play and exploration, exercising their bodies, and using their imaginations. At the same time that academic pressure has been increased in childrens' lives through inappropriate standards, their primary tool for dealing with stress--freely chosen, child-directed, intrinsically motivated play--has been undermined.
