For more than three decades, attachment theory has been a seminal contributor to research on sociopersonality development. Attachment theory regards socioper-sonality development in terms of the multifaceted influences of early relationships, including their effects on later relational intimacy, developing sense of self, and mental representations of relationships. Although its claims are sometimes controversial and its adherents contentious, the breadth of impact and continuing vitality of attachment theory make it one of the most important theoretical perspectives of 20th-century developmental science.
