Activities of Children in Different Societies and Social Classes

As recently witnessed in sociology, anthropology, and psychology [e.g., Lancy, 2008; Lareau, 2003; Rogoff, 2003], the efforts to describe childhoods in relation to their cultural contexts have entered into a new era. Two common foci are paramount to such work. One is to describe culture as an integral part of human functioning rather than serving as one of many independent variables that exert its influence on children's development. The second focus, as a corollary to the first, is to observe children over extended periods of time and in their own natural contexts in order to understand the role of culture in children's development. As part of these advances in cultural research, Tudge's [2008] recent work is a welcome addition, for he presented persuasive arguments about how to conceptualize society and social class as cultural contexts that shape and are shaped by child development in a dynamic fashion. In addition, Tudge offered a theoretical framework and methods to observe children, he proposed ethnographies as an extension of such observations, and he presented information about children from societies that have not been previously introduced to the developmental literature.
