'Conceptual Metaphor Meets Conceptual Change': Yes to Embodiment, No to Fragmentation

In this ambitious essay, Tamer Amin attempted to establish bridges between conceptual change research and research in cognitive linguistics known as conceptual metaphor and to draw their implications for science education. According to conceptual metaphor theory [Lakoff, 1987, 1993; Lakoff & Johnson, 1980, 1999], many abstract concepts rely on systematic mappings between propositional structures expressed in language and the event structures of certain basic, nonproposi-tional, experientially based notions of force, space, motion, cause, and others, which are construed in terms of image schemas. For example, in the proposition 'The general led the way to victory' the PATH image schema - that is, movement along a path - is used to convey the abstract idea of achievement of purpose.
