Facilitating the Development of Social Change Agents Commentary on Vianna and Stetsenko

How does a person move from a more defiant stance to a critical understanding that propels social action, and what are the contextual factors that support this type of development? This is an important question that should engage the developmental and community psychology literatures. In their excellent paper, Vianna and Stetsenko [this issue] begin to bring these two literatures together in ways that benefit our general theoretical understanding, as well as provide a model for how to examine a person within the context of a phenomenological stance. In this commentary, I highlight four key implications and raise two issues to consider in light of the Vianna and Stetsenko paper.
