In December 2004, 127 Young adults were paid $15 an hour to inhale chloropicrin, a pesticide that is also used in tear gas and chemical warfare. The research subjects-who stood for extended periods in a chamber filled with its vapors and also had it shot into their eyes and noses-were not given that information. Historically, the Environmental Protection Agency has relied on animal studies to determine appropriate limits for human exposure to pesticides. In an attempt to increase the levels deemed safe, pesticide manufacturers began testing the bug-killing toxins directly on humans.
