There are plenty of good reasons to wish that America's unique combination of vast resources, technical ingenuity, and can-do spirit would result in a transportation revolution of the sort that has already taken place in other cities around the world: one that greatly de-emphasizes the automobile and raises the profile of subways, light rail, buses, commuter trains, bicycles, or just plain walking. It would enormously reduce global carbon emissions. It would be more economical. And Americans would be a lot healthier were they to spend just a little less time in their cars and more time perambulating.
