Thin layer surfacing systems: an overview

A full range of proprietary thin layer asphalt surfacing products has been developed during recent years to offer a variety of different benefits for the specifier and end user. This guide provides direction to the performance characteristics produced by the principal categories of thin surfacings. Proprietary thin surfacing systems are so called and categorised due to their being applied in layers less than the nominal 40mm thickness of a conventional hot rolled asphalt (HRA) wearing course. So successful have they been in recent years that they have virtually supplanted HRA as a viable surfacing option.
